Michael Vick: Kill a dog, do the time

December 10, 2007

It’s on: Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months for animal cruelty and financing a dog-fighting conspiracy.  Like many addictions, from cocaine to gambling, Vick’s is costing him dearly:

The Atlanta Falcons are attempting to recoup bonus money from his 10-year, $130 million football contract, Vick is in default on a $1.3 million bank loan for a wine store, and two other banks have filed suits seeking repayment of a $4.5 million in loans and lines of credit.

Perhaps Vick was just born out of time and place.  Shakespeare immortalized bear baiting, and Queen Elizabeth (the first one) was a big fan of what was a big-time sport.  Even today, there are those who will defend Michael Vick and dogfighting, some on cultural, others on libertarian grounds. Money quote:

In the end, if animals are property — and they are — then their owners should be fit to do with them as they please.

Society–and the law–doesn’t see it that way.  That’s why Vick is losing his liberty–and as predicted here, his money.

Protecting Movie Industry Dogs

June 13, 2007

Even the movie industry’s dogs need protection from pirates.  No, counterfeiters aren’t keeping their DVD burners going day and night for dogs like Gigli, The Island, Zodiac or Basic Instinct 2.

It’s the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) adorable black Labradors, Flo and Lucky, that need protecting.  Flo and Lucky have the amazing (some might say unbelievable) ability to sniff out the polycarbonate chemicals used in making pirated DVDs (as well as all other kinds of DVD copies.)

So the always-creditable New Straits Times reports that Malaysian pirates are protecting their lairs and wares from the noble chocolate Labs with aggressive bulldogs.

Peddlers have come up with another 'ingenious' idea to keep Lucky and Flo away from the illegal DVD stocks - by putting up 'Beware dog' warning signs as Labrador Retrievers are thought to be vulnerable against aggressive breeds.

Undeterred, the pair of public relations dogs have allegedly helped bust over one million pirated DVDs.

NY Times Finally Catches Up to MMMQB on Lou Dobbs

May 30, 2007

So the New York Times has finally caught up to Monday Morning Media Quarterback–three weeks after we posted questions about Lou Dobb’s claim on CNN that immigrants have brought 7000 cases of leprosy to the United States.

I warned Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons about  the downside when your news anchor goes demagogic.  He claimed Dobbs’ controversial remarks were all ‘opinion’, not news.  I hope he’s watching Dobbs’ rants–and remembering the Don Imus debacle.

A Minor Milestone

May 9, 2007

We’re just two months old, and MondayMorningMediaQuarterback went over 1000 pageviews today.  Which posts were most popular?

Of course, Paris Hilton was hot, but just behind her was 70+  (she hates talking about her age) Evelyn Y. Davis, continuing her quixotic crusade for better corporate governance.
